Factories and Industrial Poles
INDUSTRIAL HUBS
With their extensive use of artificial lighting for 24/7 operations, security, and logistics, industrial hubs are one of the major contributors to light pollution. These areas, which include factories, warehouses, and distribution centres, often require high levels of illumination, not only for safety, but also for maintaining productivity during night shifts. In these industrial areas, the constant and intense lighting can spill over into surrounding areas, significantly affecting the natural environment and contributing to skyglow in nearby urban or rural regions.
INDUSTRIAL AND UTILITY INFRASTRUCTURE IN AUSTRIA
In Austria, within the areas of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the Gesäuse National Park, and the Weissensee Nature Park, power plants are major sources of light pollution due to the need for constant illumination for operational safety, maintenance, and security. The lighting is often intense and covers large areas. Sewage treatment plants also require lighting for maintenance and security purposes. The lights are typically on throughout the night in order to ensure the smooth operation of the plant and to deter unauthorised access.
