LIGHT POLLUTION

Every Light Has Its Shadow

LIGHT SOURCES

Public Spaces

Public buildings, parks, and monuments are often excessively lit at night, including emergency exits and stairwells, which are typically floodlit. Urban lighting plays a big role in light pollution, not only for safety (e.g. emergency lighting), but also for aesthetic and promotional purposes. Landmarks like castles, churches, and monasteries are illuminated to showcase their architecture and attract tourism, yet this often contributes to light pollution, especially in otherwise dark natural areas.

Some urban lighting plans reflect this tension by identifying specific landmarks where the level of lighting is expected to be maintained or even intensified in the future.
