LIGHT SOURCES
Parking Lots
Open parking lots are often floodlit at night, even when empty. The lighting in these areas may use LEDs or traditional bulbs, with colours ranging from white to yellow. In most cases, there is little consideration for directing the light downwards or for ensuring that it effectively covers the intended areas.
A MORE SUSTAINABLE APPROACH
However, change is underway. For instance, the city of Leipzig, in Germany, adopted a more sustainable approach by using parkades and parking garages that direct light inwards, preventing it from spilling into the sky. Moreover, larger shopping malls and big supermarkets often feature covered parking areas that help reduce ALAN.
